ABOUT THE EXAM
More information: Preparatory courses for the Langgymnasium in Aarau
In Aarau and throughout the canton of Aargau, the Gymnasium is referred to as a “Kantonsschule” (colloquially known as “Kanti”). The Kanti leads to the Swiss Matura in four years.
-
The two paths: Admission is either granted without an exam immediately after the 2nd grade of district school (“Bezi”) or after the 3rd grade of secondary school via an entrance exam.
-
Aarau Campus: The historic Aarau Cantonal School (Alte Kanti and Neue Kanti) offers an outstanding academic infrastructure.
-
Goal: To earn the high school diploma (Matura) for admission to universities and the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology (ETH) without having to take entrance exams.
The Aargau placement and admission process is closely tied to the specific type of upper-secondary school.
-
Graduation from the District School Without Exams: Students in the 2nd district transfer to the Cantonal School without having to take exams if their grade point average in the core subjects (German, mathematics, French, English, history/geography, and natural sciences) is at least 4.7 on both the midterm report and the end-of-year report card.
-
Through the secondary school entrance exam: Students who narrowly miss the Bezi criteria or are in the 3rd grade of secondary school can qualify for the Kanti by taking the cantonal entrance exam (Gymiprüfung).
Clear guidelines apply to all students who wish to enroll in a cantonal school in Aargau in August 2027 and are required to take the exam:
-
Exam Subjects: The three subjects— German, mathematics, and French—are tested in written exams.
-
Test Content: The test is based on the material covered in the Aargau Curriculum 21 up to the middle of the current school year (2nd Bezi or 3rd Sek).
-
Passing Grade: The exam is considered passed if the average of the three exam grades is at least 4.0.
The dates for the Aargau admission process are set by law and must be strictly adhered to.
-
Application Deadline: Official applications to the Aarau Cantonal School and registration for the entrance exam for the 2027–28 school year must be submitted by November 15, 2026, at the latest (for students transferring from elementary school) or by mid-February 2027 (for middle school students).
-
Exam Date: The cantonal written entrance exams in the Canton of Aargau are traditionally held in March 2027.
-
Start of the School Year: Classes at Kanti Aarau will begin in August 2027, after the summer break.
Since three subjects—including French—are tested in depth in Aargau, the pressure of the high school entrance exam is high. Professional tutoring and preparation in Aarau offer a decisive advantage:
-
Confidence in French: Many students struggle with the specific grammar and reading comprehension structures of this foreign language. We provide targeted practice for the Bern/Aargau exam format.
-
Practice with Actual Exams: The students take real Aargau high school entrance exams from previous years under real-world time constraints.
-
Securing Grades at Bezi: For Bezi students who want to achieve the 4.7 grade point average required to avoid exams, our tutoring program offers the perfect support to secure their report card in January and make the transition to the next level without the stress of exams.
