The QV: The cantonal final apprenticeship examination for the EFZ or EBA diploma. It focuses entirely on professional practice and the specialized skills needed directly on the job.

The BM: The academic pathway to an apprenticeship that allows for direct admission to universities of applied sciences (e.g., OST).

How exactly do the final exams (BM & QV) take place in St. Gallen?

For the QV: The practical exams are administered in close cooperation with the St. Gallen industry associations, either on-site at companies or in central exam facilities. The theory exams are taken at vocational training centers (e.g., GBS St. Gallen, BZSL, BZWW).
For the BM: The St. Gallen system requires comprehensive written exams in mathematics (particularly rigorous in the technical track) as well as written and oral exams in German, English, and French.

How is the final grade calculated, and when do you pass?

The calculation: A strict mathematical breakdown is applied in accordance with the cantonal decree: The final grade is determined on a 50/50 basis, with half based on the semester grades and half on the grades earned on the day of the exam.
Passing Threshold: To pass, an unrounded overall grade of at least 4.0 is required. The practical exam grade (for the QV) must not be a failing grade. For the BM, the total of all failing grade points must not be more than 2.0 points below a 4.0.
