The accelerated high school program in the Canton of Zurich leads to the Swiss Matura in four years and provides direct admission to universities, the ETH, and teacher training colleges. To study at universities of applied sciences, an additional practical component is required.

Since the reforms that took effect in 2024, the Central Admission Exam (ZAP) for the short-track high school program has been a purely written process; oral exams have been eliminated entirely.

Exam subjects: German and mathematics only.

Scope & Schedule (ZAP 2027):

German: Language analysis and text comprehension (45 minutes) and an essay (90 minutes).

Mathematics: Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry (90 minutes).

Admission for the 2027–28 school year is subject to both academic and age-related criteria.

Academic Prerequisites: Application from the 2nd or 3rd grade (10th or 11th school year) of the Zurich secondary school system (Division A or B) or an equivalent educational program.

Age limit: Candidates must have been born after June 30, 2010, to be eligible for the regular admissions process.
The calculation of the final grade varies significantly depending on the type of school and the students' prior academic performance.

With a preliminary grade (50/50 rule): Applies to students from a public secondary school in Zurich, Division A.

50% of the exam grade: Composed of mathematics (counts for half) and the two German sections (each counts for one-quarter).

50% experience grade (preliminary assessment): The average of the grades in German, mathematics, English, French, and Science & Technology from the January report card.

No preliminary grade (100% exam): Applies to students in Secondary Level B (with a teacher’s recommendation) as well as to students at private schools. In this case, the result of the written exam is the sole determining factor.
The cantonal requirement for passing the ZAP 2027 is clearly defined:

Taking prior coursework into account: An overall grade of at least 4.75 is required.

Excluding the preliminary grade: A final exam grade of at least 4.5 must be achieved.
Important Date in 2027: The written exam for the accelerated high school program will take place on Monday, March 8, 2027, starting at 9:00 a.m. The online registration period runs from January 1 through February 10, 2027.
