FMS, Vocational Secondary School: General Information
The Fachmittelschule (FMS) in the Canton of Zurich offers a first-rate general education with a strong focus on career preparation. It specifically prepares students for programs at Higher Technical Schools (HF) and Universities of Applied Sciences (FH).

Duration: 3 years to earn the Fachmittelschulausweis (admission to higher vocational schools). A total of 4 years, including the Fachmaturität (admission to universities of applied sciences and colleges of education).

Grades: Continuation from the 9th grade (entry in the 10th grade).

Specializations (Programs): Health/Natural Sciences, Education, Communication/Information, Music, and Theater.

Admissions Process (ZAP): A purely written exam covering the core subjects of German and mathematics. Note: There is no separate French test as part of the written ZAP.
Admission Requirements
Admission to a Zurich-based specialized secondary school requires academic qualifications and meeting an age requirement.

Admission: Students in the 3rd grade (11th school year) of Zurich’s secondary school, Division A or Division B.

Secondary Level B Special Note: Students in Section B must also provide an official recommendation from their secondary-level homeroom teacher.

Age limit: To be eligible for admission for the 2027–28 school year, applicants must have been born after June 30, 2009.
Registration Deadlines
The official cantonal application process for the Fachmittelschule is conducted entirely online via the central ZAP portal.

2027 Registration Period: From January 1, 2027, through February 10, 2027.

Required documents: You must submit the official midterm report card (January report card) for the 3rd year of secondary school.

Fee: A cantonal examination fee of CHF 50 is required for registration.
Next exam date
The cantonal entrance exam is held on the same day for all public specialized secondary schools and the vocational maturity school (BM 1) that runs concurrently with an apprenticeship.

The grading and weighting of courses are governed by precise mathematical rules.
Exam Structure

German (accounting for 50% of the exam grade): Consists of reading comprehension and language analysis (45 minutes) and an essay (90 minutes). Both parts are weighted equally.

Mathematics (accounts for 50% of the exam grade): Includes problems in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry (90 minutes).
Calculation & Passing Scores (ZAP 2027)

With Prior Achievement (Sek A): The final grade is calculated as 50% from the exam grade and 50% from the prior achievement grade (average of German, math, French, English, and science and technology). A minimum average of 4.5 is required to pass.

No prior coursework required (Sek B / private schools): The exam score alone counts 100%. An exam grade of at least 4.25 is sufficient to pass.
