ABOUT THE EXAM
More information: Preparatory courses for the Langgymnasium in Zurich
The Langgymnasium (also known as the Langzeitgymnasium) in the Canton of Zurich begins immediately after the 6th grade of elementary school and leads to the Swiss Matura in six years.
-
Target audience: Sixth-grade students.
-
Requirements: Successful completion of the Central Entrance Exam (ZAP) and meeting the age requirement (date of birth generally after July 31, 2012, for the 2027–28 school year).
-
Focus: A solid academic foundation that provides optimal preparation for future college studies.
Admission to a public Zurich high school is strictly regulated and is primarily based on the Central Admission Exam (ZAP).
-
Exam Subjects: Only the core subjects— German and mathematics —are tested in written exams. There are no oral exams.
-
The 50/50 Rule (Grading): For students attending a public elementary school in Zurich, the final grade is calculated as 50% based on exam scores and 50% based on performance grades (January report card for 6th grade).
-
Passing Threshold: When including the experience-based grade, the passing threshold is a minimum grade point average of 4.75. Without the experience-based grade (e.g., for private students), a minimum GPA of 4.5 is required.
Updated guidelines and exam formats for the ZAP 2027 will apply for the upcoming school year.
-
Written Procedure:
-
German: Reading Comprehension & Language Analysis (45 minutes) and an essay (90 minutes).
-
Mathematics: Problems in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry (90 minutes).
-
-
Weighting: The math exam counts for twice as much as each of the German sections, so that math and German each account for exactly half of the final exam grade.
-
Permitted aids: A set square, compass, and pencil (for geometry only) are permitted, as well as a spelling dictionary (Duden, Volume 1) for the essay.
The registration process for the Central Admissions Exam does not allow for any delays and is conducted entirely online.
-
Regular application period: From January 1, 2027, through February 10, 2027, online via the official cantonal ZAP portal.
-
Exception (K+S Gymnasium Rämibühl): For the arts and sports high school, the application deadline is January 15, 2027.
-
Registration fee: The cost is CHF 50 per school year and is non-refundable.
The cantonal exam date has been set and is mandatory for all regular public high schools in the Canton of Zurich.
-
Exam date: Monday, March 8, 2027.
-
Schedule for the Langgymnasium: The test begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 11:45 a.m.
-
Results: The results and the final admission decision are typically communicated in writing approximately 2 to 3 weeks after the exam date (end of March 2027). The subsequent probationary period begins after the summer break in August 2027.

It’s worth investing in a high-quality preparatory course for the entrance exam to a long-term high school in Zurich and starting to study early. The entrance exams and everyday life at high school are nothing like elementary school. Often, the curriculum isn’t covered in its entirety; there isn’t enough space or time to provide targeted support to individual students; or the students’ individual needs aren’t adequately addressed. Schools frequently fail to teach students how to study properly and efficiently and how to develop thinking patterns that lead to long-term learning success. Yet these skills are essential for a successful high school experience. Our professional long-term high school preparatory course can fill these gaps.
In addition, a high school diploma will open many doors for you and create new opportunities. It gives you the chance to explore a wide range of subjects in depth and discover new areas of interest. It is also a prerequisite for studying at a university in Switzerland and is viewed favorably by many future employers.
