ABOUT THE EXAM
More information: WMS Entrance Exam Prep Courses in Basel
The WMS Basel (e.g., at the Wirtschaftsmittelschule Basel-Stadt or the kvBL in Liestal/Reinach) offers a comprehensive academic program that closely integrates theory and practice in the field of business. The program lasts a total of 4 years.
-
Program Structure: 3 years of structured full-time instruction at the school, followed by a 1-year supervised long-term internship at a company.
-
Degree: Graduates earn a “double certification”—the Federal Certificate of Competence (EFZ) in Business Administration and the Vocational Maturity Diploma (with a focus on economics).
-
Career prospects: This degree guarantees admission to Swiss universities of applied sciences (FH) without having to take an entrance exam, or paves the way for university studies through the Passerelle program.
Admission to the WMS is based on the cantonal grading and point system for the 3rd year of secondary school.
-
Exam-Free Transition (P & E Tracks):
-
From Level P: A minimum grade point average of 4.0 is required across all subjects relevant to the doctoral program. In addition, a minimum of 32 points must be achieved in German and mathematics (which count double) as well as in French, English, biology, and physics (which count once).
-
For Level E: A minimum grade point average of 4.5 and a total score of at least 36 points in the same combination of subjects are required.
-
-
The Voluntary Entrance Exam: Students who narrowly fail to meet the requirements for the advanced tracks at public secondary schools based on their January report card can take the cantonal entrance exam in the spring to qualify retroactively.
In Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, the cantonal entrance exam for high schools, FMS, and WMS is standardized.
-
Exam subjects: The only subjects tested in writing are German and mathematics. Foreign language exams (such as French or English) are not included in this centralized placement test.
-
Exam duration: Each subject is tested in a 90-minute session under strict supervision.
-
Content: The focus is on the competencies outlined in Curriculum 21 for secondary school through the end of the first semester of the 3rd grade. To pass, students must achieve an unrounded overall grade point average of at least 4.0.
To ensure that students can start school in August 2027, all administrative milestones must be met exactly:
-
Registration Window: Online registration for the WMS and for the voluntary entrance exam will open in January 2027 and will close definitively in mid-February 2027.
-
Additional assignment (Canton BL): For students from Basel-Landschaft, completing an online self-assessment is also required (
infosetting-bl.ch) required. -
Exam Date: The centralized written entrance exams will take place in March 2027.
Since the entire entrance exam in Basel depends on just two subjects (German and math), every mistake counts twice as much. Professional preparation mitigates this risk:
-
Confidence in Math: Complex secondary school topics such as calculating percentages, rearranging algebraic expressions, and geometry are reviewed in a targeted manner.
-
Time Management Training: Since exactly 90 minutes are allotted for each subject, the students learn to prioritize tasks in a structured way and avoid careless mistakes under stress.
-
Exam Preparation Routine: By working through practice problems specific to Basel and simulating real exam situations, the students will walk into the exam rooms in March 2027 with complete confidence.
