What exactly is the Wirtschaftsmittelschule (WMS) in Aarau?

WMS Aarau is a practice-oriented secondary school that combines a solid business education with a broad general education. The program lasts a total of 4 years.

Structure: 3 years of full-time classroom instruction at the cantonal school, followed by a 1-year supervised long-term internship (work experience) at a company.
Degree: Upon successful completion of the program, graduates receive both the Federal Certificate of Competence (EFZ) in Business Administration and the Vocational Maturity Diploma (specialization in Business and Services, Business track).
Prospects: This degree provides direct, exam-free admission to Swiss universities of applied sciences (FH) or, through the Passerelle program, paves the way to universities and the ETH.

How does the admission process for the WMS in Aargau work?

Admission to the WMS is based on the type of high school attended and the grades earned there as reflected in the midterm report for the graduating year.

Graduation from the District School Without Exams: Third-grade students at the District School are promoted without having to take exams if they earn at least a 4.0 in German and mathematics and achieve a qualifying overall grade point average.
Graduating from secondary school without exams: Students in the 3rd year of secondary school must have a grade of at least 4.0 in German and mathematics and a high overall average of at least 5.3 across all relevant report card grades.
The cantonal entrance exam: Students who do not meet these strict grade requirements in the January midterm report, or who come from a private school, can qualify by taking the cantonal entrance exam in the spring.

The Cantonal WMS Entrance Exam in Aargau for the 2026–27 School Year

For students who do not meet the criteria for admission without an exam, the written entrance exam is the key to getting into high school.

Exam Subjects: The three core subjects— German, mathematics, and English—are tested in written exams.
Content: The exam material is based on the competencies outlined in the Aargau Curriculum 21 up to the middle of the first semester of the graduating class (3rd Bezi or 3rd Sek).
