ABOUT THE EXAM

More info: Preparation for the Fachmatura final exam in Bern

In the Canton of Bern, the vocational baccalaureate follows the successful completion of the three-year FMS program (Fachmittelschulausweis). It typically lasts an additional year and combines in-depth academic instruction with practical work or internships.

  • Objective: The specialized high school diploma certifies a student’s readiness for higher education in a specific field and grants admission without entrance exams to the corresponding degree programs at Swiss universities of applied sciences (FH) as well as to teacher training colleges (PH) for prospective teachers.

  • Bern's programs: Education, Health, Social Work, Art and Design, Music, and Communication and Media.

The Maturität exams in the Canton of Bern take place at the end of the fourth year of high school (GYM4). They include both written and oral components to assess the full range of skills.

  • Exam Subjects: In the Canton of Bern, five subjects are typically tested as part of the Maturität exam:

    • German (written and spoken)

    • French or English (written and spoken)

    • Mathematics (written and oral)

    • Major Subject (written and/or oral)

    • Another subject as determined by the canton or the school (e.g., history or an elective subject, often tested orally).

  • Additional component: The Maturität thesis (including an oral presentation and presentation discussion) is also an integral part of the graduation process.

The Bern grading system is based on a combination of performance during the last school year (experience grades) and the actual final exams.

  • Grade Calculation: In the subjects covered by the exams, the final Maturität grade is composed of 50% of the cumulative grade (the report card grade from the final year) and 50% of the exam grade (the average of the written and oral scores). In subjects not covered by the exams, only the cumulative grade is used.

  • Requirements for Passing: In the Canton of Bern, the Matura is considered passed if:

    • The sum of all deviations of grades below 4.0 does not exceed 2.0 grade points.

    • There are no more than four grades below a 4.0.

    • The total of all high school graduation exam scores reaches a specific, legally established minimum number of points.

The schedule for spring and summer 2027 is tightly packed for students in Bern:

  • Mid-May 2027: End of regular classes for graduating classes and announcement of final grades based on performance.

  • Late May through June 2027: Administration of the central written and, subsequently, oral Maturität exams at Bern’s high schools. The submission and presentation of the subject-specific Maturität projects will follow a separate, subject-specific schedule in the spring.

  • Late June / Early July 2027: Official high school graduation ceremonies and formal presentation of diplomas in the Canton of Bern.

The pressure during the final stretch is enormous, since exam grades account for half of the overall report card. ILS Tutoring Bern offers personalized support to help students achieve their best results in the summer of 2027:

  • Targeted Exam Simulation: We use actual Bern final exams from previous years in mathematics, German, and foreign languages to help students perfect their time management skills.

  • Preparing for Oral Exams: Through structured simulations, we help students overcome their nervousness before oral exams in foreign languages and their core subjects.

  • Securing Preliminary Grades: Even during the current school year, we help students who are at risk of failing by providing intensive one-on-one sessions, so they can carry a solid preliminary grade into their exams as a safety net.
