The vocational baccalaureate follows the three-year FMS certificate and lasts an additional year. It qualifies students for admission without entrance exams to Swiss universities of applied sciences (FH) and—for the education track—for direct admission to the University of Teacher Education (PH).

Basel Programs: Health/Natural Sciences, Social Work, Education, Art and Design, Music/Theater, and Communication/Media.
The Maturität exams take place at the end of the 4th year of high school and consist of written and oral components in five subjects:

First language: German (written and spoken)

Second national language or English: French/Italian or English (written and spoken)

Mathematics: (written and oral)

Major: (written and oral)

Fifth subject: Determined by the canton or the respective school (often a subject such as history, geography, or biology).

The Maturität thesis is graded separately and counts as a standalone grade.

The calculation: In the subjects tested, the course grade (annual grade) accounts for 50% and the exam grade (average of the written and oral exams) accounts for 50%.

Passing Requirements: In Basel, the Matura is considered passed if the double sum of all downward grade deviations below a grade of 4.0 is not greater than the simple sum of all upward grade deviations, and if no more than four grades are below 4.0.

May 2027: Deadline for submitting experience-based grades.

Late May through mid-June 2027: Centralized written exams, followed by oral exams, at Basel’s high schools.

June/July 2027: Presentations of the specialized high school graduation projects and formal certificate ceremonies.
