ABOUT THE EXAM

More info: QV (LAP) Final Exam Preparation in Zurich

The Qualification Procedure (QV) is the official and standardized final assessment at the end of basic vocational training in Switzerland. It has replaced the former "Apprenticeship Completion Examination" (LAP), but essentially serves the same purposes.

  • Objective: To demonstrate that a trainee has acquired the vocational skills, specialized knowledge, and general education required by the training plan.

  • Certification: Upon successful completion of the QV, the Federal Certificate of Competence (EFZ) is awarded for 3- or 4-year apprenticeships, or the Federal Vocational Certificate (EBA) is awarded for 2-year apprenticeships.

The QV has a modular structure and consists of various legally mandated assessment components that span the entire apprenticeship period or extend until the end of the apprenticeship.

  • Practical Work: Depending on the vocational training program, this takes the form of Individual Practical Work (IPA) directly at the training company or Prescribed Practical Work (VPA) at an inter-company training center (üK).

  • Vocational Knowledge (BK): Written and/or oral exams on theoretical subject matter, which are generally administered at the end of vocational school.

  • General Education (AB): Usually consists of an in-depth project (VA) completed independently during the final year of study, as well as a final written exam.

  • Grades Based on Performance: Academic performance (grades on the vocational school report card) and evaluations from inter-company courses (üK) are factored into the final grade as fixed percentages.

The requirements for passing are precisely defined in the respective training regulations for each profession, but in Switzerland they generally follow a strict basic rule.

  • The main hurdle: The QV is considered passed if the overall grade is at least a 4.0.

  • The Practical Skills Hurdle: In almost all professions, the grade in the “Practical Work” (IPA or VPA) qualification area must not be lower than 4.0. A failing grade in practical skills automatically results in failure of the entire vocational qualification, even if the academic grades are excellent.

  • Insufficient Grades: In most cases, no more than two course grades may be below a 4.0, and the total downward deviation in grades may not exceed a certain value (often 2.0 points).

The QV program is strictly scheduled and runs throughout the entire final semester of vocational training.

  • January through March 2027: Development and submission of the in-depth project (VA) in the General Education course, as well as final preparation of the IPA project proposals.

  • March through May 2027: Timeframe for completing the Individual Practical Assignments (IPA) directly at the respective training companies.

  • June 2027: Administration of the central written and oral final vocational exams (vocational skills and general education) at vocational schools.

  • Late June / Early July 2027: Official apprenticeship graduation ceremonies (Lehrfirmung) and presentation of the EFZ and EBA certificates.

Completing a vocational apprenticeship requires a high degree of self-organization, as students must juggle the final practical sprint at their workplace with the theoretical exam material at the same time. ILS Tutoring offers targeted support here:

  • Exam Prep for Vocational Knowledge: We’ll review all the theoretical material covered during your vocational school years and present it in a clear and understandable way to help you prepare for the written exam in June 2027.

  • Support for the in-depth project (VA): Assistance with structuring, proper citation, and the academic framework of the required project for general education.

  • Closing Academic Gaps: Targeted remediation of weaknesses in math, languages, or economics and law to ensure that the grade point average crosses the critical 4.0 threshold in the final stretch.
