What exactly is the vocational high school diploma?

The vocational baccalaureate in the canton of St. Gallen complements the FMS diploma. Depending on the track, it requires either an internship lasting several months or an additional semester of schoolwork in order to gain admission to a university of applied sciences or a college of education (PH).

How does the high school graduation exam work?

In the canton of St. Gallen, the Maturität examination process includes exams in five subjects:

German (written and spoken)
Mathematics (written and oral)
A foreign language (French, English, etc. – written and spoken)
Major (written and oral)
A supplementary subject or an additional core subject (often assessed only through an oral exam).
The Maturität thesis and its oral defense count toward a separate grade.

How is the Maturität grade calculated, and when do you pass?

The calculation: The 50-50 split principle applies: The final grade in an exam subject is determined 50% by the cumulative grade from the previous school year and 50% by the exam performance.
Passing Requirements: The Matura is considered passed if the total number of grade points meets the cantonal minimum standard, no more than four grades are failing (below 4.0), and the total of the failing deviations from a grade of 4.0 does not exceed 2.0 grade points.

What are the important dates for the 2027 graduating classes?

May 2027: Determination of the St. Gallen performance grades.
Early to mid-June 2027: Written high school graduation exams throughout the canton. The oral exams will follow.
End of June 2027: Graduation and ceremonial presentation of high school diplomas.
