The final exams are held at the end of the BM program (as part of the apprenticeship for BM1 in the final year of training, or as a full-time or part-time program for BM2 after the apprenticeship). Exams are administered in the core and specialized subjects:

Languages: German (written and spoken), as well as French and/or English (written and/or spoken, depending on the program).

Mathematics: Written exam (basic or advanced mathematics, weighted heavily depending on the program type).

Specialization subjects: In the Business Administration track (Business track), for example, students are tested on finance and accounting as well as business and law.

Interdisciplinary Project Work (IDPA): The written paper and its presentation count as a fixed component of the final grade.

The calculation: In courses that include an exam, the final grade is 50% based on the cumulative grade (average of the semester grades) and 50% based on the exam grade. In courses intended solely for doctoral studies, only the cumulative grade is used.

Requirements for Passing: The vocational maturity examination is considered passed in the Canton of Bern if:

The overall average of all BM grades is at least 4.0.

No more than two subject grades may be failing (below 4.0).

The total of the grade deviations from a grade of 4.0 does not exceed 2.0 grade points.

May 2027: Deadline for submitting all performance-based grades at vocational and middle schools in Bern.

Early to mid-June 2027: Administration of the central written and oral vocational baccalaureate exams.

Early July 2027: Official BM graduation ceremonies and diploma presentation.

Focus on Math: Math is the subject most likely to be a weak point, especially in technical and business programs. We systematically fill in the gaps.
