ABOUT THE EXAM
More information: Follow-up audit in Bern
The placement test is a standardized, cantonal procedure administered at the end of the 6th grade of elementary school. Its sole purpose is to facilitate a clear placement decision for upper secondary school when teachers and parents disagree during the transition meeting (e.g., when parents are aiming for the Sek level, but the teacher recommends the Real level).
-
Objective: An independent assessment to determine whether a child is ready to meet the requirements of secondary school (Sek).
-
Character: A fair, canton-wide standardized procedure. In the event of a disagreement, the exam results are absolutely decisive for the school administration.
The proficiency test assesses the foundation laid during elementary school. The test always covers all three core subjects, regardless of which subject was the point of disagreement during the transition interview.
-
German: Written exam (90 minutes) focusing on reading comprehension, language structures, and writing an original text.
-
Mathematics: Written exam (90 minutes) covering arithmetic, geometry, and complex word problems from Curriculum 21.
-
French: Written and oral exam components (maximum of 90 minutes total). The exam assesses listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and basic communication skills.
Since the placement process takes place during the winter of 6th grade, the schedule for the placement test for the 2027–28 school year is very tight:
-
January 2027: Parents receive the official transition report and then meet with the teacher for a transition meeting.
-
Registration Deadline: If no agreement is reached, the registration for the placement exam must be submitted to the homeroom teacher via the transfer form by February 20, 2027, at the latest.
-
Exam Date: In the Canton of Bern, the cantonal proficiency exams are traditionally held in March 2027 (usually during calendar week 11). The exams are administered regionally at designated exam-administering schools within each school district.
Since the placement test is administered under real, cantonal testing conditions, it is often the first major exam situation in the lives of sixth graders. A professional preparation course helps take the stress out of the situation:
-
Coverage of all three subjects: Since exams in German, mathematics , and French are mandatory, we systematically address any gaps in all three areas in accordance with the guidelines of the Bern Curriculum 21.
-
Focus on French: Many 6th-grade elementary school students struggle with French, a relatively new subject. We provide intensive training in the required listening and reading comprehension skills, as well as the short oral presentation.
-
Working with Curriculum Frameworks: Our courses are precisely aligned with the official cantonal curriculum frameworks and use targeted exam simulations to help children learn to handle the time pressure of a 90-minute exam per subject with composure.
-
Building Mental Resilience: We turn high-pressure situations (“Sek or Real”) into positive experiences of success by using routine to give the child the self-confidence they need for that day in March.
