ABOUT THE EXAM

The QV (Qualification Process): This is the modern term for the traditional final apprenticeship exam (LAP). Every apprentice must successfully complete the QV in order to receive the Federal Certificate of Competence (EFZ) or the Federal Vocational Certificate (EBA). It primarily assesses professional practice and technical and theoretical expertise.
The Vocational Maturity Diploma (BM): It is an optional, additional school-based program (taken alongside an apprenticeship as BM1 or after the apprenticeship as BM2). It supplements the QV with an in-depth general education and provides exam-free admission to universities of applied sciences.

For the QV: The program is divided into practical work (either as an in-company practical training program or a centralized practical training program) and theoretical vocational knowledge. In addition, there is general education, which consists of a written exam and the presentation of the in-depth project.
For the BM: Graduates take standardized cantonal exams in languages (German, French, English) and mathematics. In addition, they must successfully defend their Interdisciplinary Project (IDPA) during a colloquium.

The 50/50 Rule: For both the BM and the academic components of the QV, the semester grades account for 50% and the actual exam performance accounts for 50%. A strong academic record throughout the year is therefore the best safety net.
Passing Requirements: To pass, an overall grade point average of at least 4.0 is required. In the QV, the practical exam grade (practical work) must not fall below 4.0 under any circumstances (failing criterion). In the BM, no more than two subject grades may be failing, and the total negative deviation may not exceed 2.0 grade points.

January/February 2027: Official registration of apprentices for the qualification process by the training company with the Bern Office of Secondary Education and Vocational Training (MBA).
March through May 2027: Development and completion of the Individual Practical Assignments (IPA) directly at the training companies in Bern, as well as submission of the IDPA/VA assignments.
June 2027: The central, cantonal exam session (written and oral) at the vocational schools.
Early July 2027: Official announcement of grades and ceremonial presentation of EFZ, EBA, and BM certificates at the major cantonal graduation ceremonies.

Mock exams under time pressure: By having students work through actual Bern exam series from previous years, we help them overcome their nerves and optimize their time management for the big day.
