ABOUT THE EXAM
More information: Preparatory courses for the Langgymnasium in Basel
In the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, the Gymnasium follows the three-year secondary school program and leads to the Swiss Matura in three years (or four years in some tracks or for students who transfer early to Basel-Landschaft).
-
Goal: A comprehensive academic education that provides admission without entrance exams to all Swiss universities, the ETH, and the universities of teacher education.
-
Areas of Focus: Students choose from various tracks (e.g., physics and applied mathematics, economics and law, biology and chemistry, or modern/classical languages).
-
Degree: Swiss Maturity Certificate.
Admission to Basel’s high schools is based primarily on academic performance (academic tracks) in secondary school. Students who do not fully meet the criteria can try their luck by taking the cantonal entrance exam.
-
Exam-Free Admission: In Basel-Stadt, students who have achieved the P track (pre-gymnasium level) or a correspondingly high grade point average in the E track (advanced level) are eligible for direct admission. In Basel-Landschaft, similar grading requirements apply to the P and E levels.
-
The Entrance Exam (Gymnasium Exam): Students who narrowly miss the required grade point average in the core subjects can secure a spot at the Gymnasium by successfully passing the voluntary cantonal entrance exam.
Clear cantonal guidelines apply to students who wish to enroll in high school in the summer of 2027 and are required to take the exam.
-
Exam Subjects: The exam assesses core competencies in German and mathematics.
-
Exam Content: The entire test is based exactly on the secondary school curriculum (Curriculum 21) up to the end of the first semester of the 3rd year of secondary school.
-
Passing Grade: The exam is considered passed if the average of the two exam grades is at least 4.0.
The administrative deadlines for the Basel admission process are strict and must be strictly adhered to.
-
Registration Period: Official registration for the Gymnasium and registration for the entrance exam for the 2027–28 school year will take place in January and February 2027 through the educational portals of the cantons of BS and BL, respectively.
-
Exam Date: The cantonal written entrance exams in Basel traditionally take place in March 2027.
-
Start of School: Once the admission process is complete, high school will begin with the new school year in August 2027.
The entrance exam is challenging because, under intense time pressure, it tests precisely the interdisciplinary skills required for high school. A targeted preparation course offers significant advantages:
-
Exam-Style Practice: Students become familiar with the specific types of questions found on the original Basel exams and practice effective time management.
-
Filling in Knowledge Gaps: Complex mathematical topics (geometry, word problems, equations) and linguistic nuances (essay structure, text analysis) are reviewed and reinforced in depth.
-
Stress Reduction: By taking regular practice tests, students will approach the actual exam in March 2027 feeling calm, confident, and fully prepared.
