ABOUT THE EXAM

More info: QV (LAP) Final Exam Preparation in Basel

  • The QV: This is the mandatory qualification procedure (formerly known as the LAP) at the end of the apprenticeship, required to obtain the EFZ or EBA diploma. The focus is entirely on practical vocational skills.

  • The BM: An advanced school certificate earned either concurrently with an apprenticeship (BM1) or afterward on a full-time or part-time basis (BM2). It certifies academic readiness for admission to universities of applied sciences.

  • For the QV: The practical portion of the exam is administered either at the workplace (IPA) or at the associations’ regional training centers (VPA). The academic exams take place at the centers in Basel (e.g., AGS, BFB, or kvBL).

  • For the BM program: Written and oral sessions in the core subjects (German, foreign languages, mathematics), as well as specialization-specific exams (e.g., finance and accounting for the BM in Business).

  • The calculation: The 50-50 principle applies to all exam subjects: Mathematically, the final grade is composed in equal parts of the preliminary grade (based on prior performance) and the performance on the day of the exam. All grades are rounded to the nearest half or whole grade.

  • Passing requirement: An overall average of at least 4.0 is required. For the BM, the total of all failing grade deviations must not exceed 2.0 points. For the QV, a failing performance in the core practical component will inevitably result in failure of the entire process.

  • February/March 2027: Deadline for submitting independent projects (SA) and interdisciplinary projects (IDPA) in BS and BL.

  • April through June 2027: Main phase of practical exams at the workplaces, as well as written and oral exams at the vocational schools.

  • Late June/July 2027: Official release of grades and the traditional graduation ceremonies (e.g., at St. Jakobshalle).

  • Using exam databases: We practice with the specific question types used at Basel's vocational schools.

  • Oral Expert Training: We simulate professional discussions and oral exams in French and English to help overcome language barriers and exam anxiety.

  • Securing Preliminary Grades: We begin supporting students as early as their final semester to help them raise any shaky experience-based grades above the important 4.0 threshold in time.
